set building

After a meeting and workshop with professional set builder Richard Mccabe, I was given a lot of insight into set builder as a career and what sort of challenges you would expect to face in this field. I was given advice on what sort of design programmes i would need to use to give me an edge. Despite this workshop being more focused on sert design rather than prop making, I was able to take a lot away from it, as it made me rethink some of my making processes to make them professional a little less "blue peter." Despite this, I am still going to use the advice of Marcus and salvatore from my tutorial, in which to use as many found materials as possible to keep the cost down.

I have started looking at the work of Mark Cordory as a prop maker and designer, after stumbling across a Doctor Who blog referencing his work. I am impressed and inspired by his sculptural work to his construction of full scale sets for doctor who. He uses a huge range of materials and processes such as casting and making moulds, which has helped me understand what sort of skill sets I have yet to learn to stand a chance at getting work in this industry.

Mark Cordory also creates anamatronic puppets for children's television and elaborate costumes, showing me that modelmaking in this sector is versatile and these skills can be contextualised in different ways.

His blog and gallery can be found here:
